a new leaf for deaf people

Meditation and Yoga

Using her advanced sign language skills, which she has developed over the past 14 years, and as a qualified tutor in Deaf Awareness and Sign Language, Sandra wishes to help deaf people experience the practice of Meditation and Yoga

Aware of a challenge in store, Sandra is confident that she can put together a basic programme that will appeal to the needs of deaf people
.

We can work together to develop a suitable style; focussing particularly on ‘expression’ within yoga; deaf people will love this as they are used to expressing themselves so well.

Obstacles that deaf people will face is knowing when to come out of a pose, especially the relaxation and meditation pose, with their eyes closed. Sandra has thought about this and the answer lies in being creative, for instance dimming the lights, with all instructions given beforehand.

Having developed and taught deaf awareness programmes, and befriended deaf people for many years, I know their needs extremely well. Deaf people can learn about meditation and yoga in their own language and feel comfortable with the benefits of this wonderful addition to their lives.
